The Approach

Observe the work. Discuss, ask, and clarify.

A process tailored for any experience, at any level, from any background.

Observable behaviours, not generic value labels.

Applying Calculated Intention to Accident Prevention.

  1. Listening to those doing the work

Start with the people closest to the task. Their hands-on knowledge exposes what is working, what is getting in the way, and what needs attention.

  2. Direct field observation

See the work in action. The conditions, equipment, interactions and changes that a procedure could never show.

  3. Straightforward dialogue across your organization

Speak plainly with – not at – crews, supervisors, managers and leaders to move information in both directions and decisions reflect field needs.

  4. Education and participation

Help people understand the reason behind a requirement and invite them to take part in making the work safer and more practical.

  5. Integrity and confidentiality

Handle difficult information carefully, communicate honestly and respect the responsibility that comes with independent external guidance.

  6. Accountability

Make responsibilities understandable and follow through on what has been discussed, assigned and agreed upon.

  7. Influence rather than authority

Build trust through observation, sound reasoning and clear communication—not authority for its own sake.

  8. On the job and off it

Take what you learn at the worksite home with you - young eyes are watching how you do things around the house, in the garage, and at the lake.

  9. Consequences exist far beyond the worksite

Remember that an incident affects more than a dashboard number. Its effects extend to families and communities for years beyond the day it occurred.

Bring field reality into the conversation.
